Prof. Ahmed H. Hassan Al-Marzouqi obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry & Biophysics from Oregon State University in 1993, followed by a Master of Science in Genetics from the same institution in 1997. He pursued his doctoral studies in the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at Pennsylvania State University, earning his Ph.D. in 2002. Presently, he holds the position of Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), bringing over 25 years of expertise in Molecular and Cellular Biology.
Prof. Al-Marzouqi's research endeavors are dedicated to elucidating the intricate mechanisms governing gene regulation by epigenetic markers and their implications in cancer initiation and progression. He specializes in investigating the functionality of chromatin-modifying complexes, aiming to decipher their role in gene regulation and the pathological consequences of their dysregulation, particularly in cancer. His scholarly contributions have been disseminated through numerous publications in esteemed peer-reviewed journals such as Cell, Molecular Cell, MCB, PNAS, NAR, and JBC. His distinguished research profile has earned him research grants from prestigious institutions including the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research, the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research (DHFMR), the Emirates Foundation, and UAEU, among others. In recognition of his contributions in research, Dr. Al-Marzouqi has received numerous awards, including the prestigious 2018 UAE Scientists Pioneers Award and a National Award bestowed by UAEU Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Prof. Al-Marzouqi's academic dedication extends beyond research, as he actively mentors both undergraduate and graduate students in Molecular Biology, nurturing the future generation of scientists in the UAE. He has held significant administrative roles at CMHS, serving as the Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Studies (2011-2013) and as the Director of Research and Sponsored Projects at UAEU (2013-2016). Additionally, he has served as the Senior Director of Research and Graduate Studies at Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) (2017-2019) and as the Chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee at the Dubai Healthcare City Regulatory (DHCR). Since 2019, he has been entrusted with the leadership role as the Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at CMHS, where he continues to inspire excellence in both research and education.
