Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
As the UAE’s flagship university, UAEU has a distinctive mission, which emphasizes its central role in educating the country’s future leaders and driving a strategic research agenda.
UAEU is striving to make “a positive contribution to the advancement of United Arab Emirates by preparing graduates for future leadership, providing quality education that meets international standards, developing research solutions in areas strategic to the nation”
Defining and communicating a university-wide set of learning outcomes help the university to address its mission, because learning outcomes:
- Inform students about what is expected of them,
- Guide the development of curricula, syllabi and assessment, and
- Facilitate the evaluation of the university’s effectiveness in achieving its educational objectives.
The UAEU Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) define the core competencies that graduates will need to prepare them to be successful in their chosen discipline areas, assume future leadership roles, and contribute to a national research effort.
UAEU students are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes through their academic work in their degree program, including general education and the major, and their co-curricular activities.
Upon successful completion of a UAEU degree, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in a particular discipline and apply these ethically in real-life contexts (Disciplinary Competency).
- Apply research skills in their academic work (Research).
- Locate, evaluate, and effectively use information derived from a variety of sources (Information Literacy).
- Analyze quantitative data, and draw reasonable conclusions (Quantitative Reasoning).
- Evaluate issues logically, from multiple perspectives, and develop reasoned and creative solutions (Critical Thinking).
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, to diverse audiences (Communication).
