Project Description

The main objective of this project is to evaluate the ability of different strains of microalgae to grow in water containing phenolic compounds, or emulsified oil, and at the same time utilize these organic contaminants as a carbon source to reduce their concentrations. The phenol(s) and oil removal efficiency and the growth rates will be evaluated at different initial concentrations and other conditions. After harvesting the grown biomass, different oil extraction and biodiesel production techniques will be tested for better productivity and quality of biodiesel.
