Overview
Arabic is the official language of the United Arab Emirates. It is characterized by its linguistic duality, i.e. Standard Arabic and spoken Arabic.
Standard Arabic, which is the language of the holy Quran, is used in all Arab countries, and it is the official language used in all government institutions in the United Arab Emirates. However, the spoken Arabic dialects are used outside the official settings.
Arabic is also the six official languages in the United Nations.
The Arabic program in the Developmental Instruction Unit (DIU) offers several Arabic courses (Arabic for Law ARBU 150, Arabic for Specific Purposes (ASP), and Emirates Studies HSS105).
All those courses aim to develop the students oral and written communicative skills in standard Arabic which will help them in pursuing their undergraduate and post graduate academic studies, and research.
Additionally, students will be able to learn more about the UAE and the social, economic and political events in the country.
The Arabic unit in the DIU adopts the latest methodologies in teaching standard Arabic, which aim at developing students reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills using the latest media and technology such as smart boards, iPads, online teaching, and EDX platform.
