Project Management for Managers
OVERVIEW
Companies are struggling to implement strategy, despite elaborate strategic plans. They lack an implementation paradigm and mindset. Project management provides such a mechanism to proceed from strategic management and planning to executing those strategies through projects. This course is aimed at empowering business managers to understand the value of project management and deliver projects successfully, and to cultivate the understanding of the influence project management has on business strategy and long term sustained success.
COURSE DESCRIPTION AND MAIN OBJECTIVE
To have successful project execution, it is important to understand the functional aspects of project management, i.e., methodologies, tools and techniques. Project professionals and organizational managers must understand the value, role and function of project management in delivering successful projects and its role in the successful roll-out of business strategy. The aim of this course is to empower managers to use the basic project management tools and techniques to deliver projects successfully. In addition, to build on this knowledge by supplying further best practices to excel within the project environment and to use project management to roll out business strategy successfully.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On the completion of this course, delegates will be able to apply the generic project management functions, such as scoping, scheduling, costing as well as controlling, monitoring and closing projects; Apply generic project management processes; Use specific project management supporting functions; Understand the strategic role of project management within the organization; and Manage the key success factors of project management within the business.
CONTENT
This course will address 6 topics.
Topic 1: Introduction to Projects:
The Project and its role in the Organization, Defining Project Management; Reasons for project failure; The Characteristics of Projects; The Strategic Role of Projects within Organizations
Topic 2: The Project Manager:
The Characteristics of a good Project Manager; The types of Project Managers; The Project Manager and the Project Leader; Leadership styles and the Project Manager
Topic 3: Project Management and the Value of Project Management to the Organization:
Foundations of Project Management; Planning; The interdependence of Performance, Time and Cost; The processes of Project Management; Different methodologies of Project Management; Impact of having a developed project management function; Improving the organization by improving the project management function
Topic 4: Front-end Loading and Planning for a Successful Project: The project and decisions needed; Projects, Programs and Portfolios; Front End Loading and its value for successful projects
Topic 5: Planning for a Successful Project:
Project Scoping; Project Scheduling; Project Costing; Project Integration Management
Topic 6: The Successful Execution, Control and Monitoring of Projects:
Project execution; Monitoring and Controlling the project to success; Closing the project
FACULTY MEMBER
Dr Coenie Nel is a passionate professional with more than 16 years of exposure to various national and international infrastructure projects. After spending valuable project time with engineering consultants and contractors, Dr Nel decided to follow his passion, Project Management. He combined that with his talents, leadership, and teaching, to follow a career in developing individuals and organizations to become more successful through applying the principles of Project Management. He has also managed various projects to successful completion on behalf of the client organization.
Dr Nel is a PMI-accredited Project Management Professional (PMP) and has facilitated more than 80 Project Management programs, nationally and internationally, on various levels for more than 9 years. He has delivered various successful Project Management development programs (individual and organizational) in the private sector, with clients from industries such as the Petrochemical, Ship Building, General Subcontractor, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, Design, Mining, and the Travel industry.
Dr Nel recently successfully obtained his PhD degree, proving mastery in Project Management, Project and Organization strategy, and the integration of these concepts. He also holds master s degrees in Business Administration (MBA) and Engineering (MSc.Eng Civil), as well as a baccalaureate in Civil Engineering (B.Eng Civil). He is registered as a Professional Civil Engineer, PrEng, Engineering Council South Africa; and as a Project Management Professional, PMP, Project Management Institute (PMI)
TARGET GROUP
This course is aimed at functional level managers such as finance managers, product managers, process managers, human resources managers, and customer experience managers who want to understand the role and value of the marketing function and the interaction of marketing with other organizational functions.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
It is assumed participants will be able to follow and participate discussions in English, as well as write assignments on project management for managers.

CERTIFICATE
