The United Arab Emirates University has launched a series of activities and events
to celebrate the "National Reading Month 2023", which is held in March every year
under the theme of "UAE Reads", confirming that the university is one of the greatest
educational institutions that is concerned with building minds, and promoting students'
engagement with reading, in order to build a generation of readers equipped with knowledge.
In celebration of this event, the Higher Organizing Committee at the university has prepared a program that includes about 50 activities, with the participation of various colleges and departments.
In that regard, Prof. Hassan Alnaboodah, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, confirmed the UAEU's commitment to participate in the National Reading Month, and said, "There is no doubt that the celebration of the Reading Month emphasizes that the UAEU is proceeding at a steady pace and strong determination in reinforcing the goals of the Reading Month for which it was launched since March 2016." He added, “These events and activities are based on the university’s belief in the importance of supporting the culture of reading, to be a major part of our daily lives and a beacon for creative ideas and constructive words.”
Within the same context, Prof. Hassan Alnaboodah explained, "These events and activities that the university has planned and implemented under the theme of "UAE Reads", fall within the framework of the care, support and guidance of H.E. Zaki Nusseibeh, the Cultural Adviser to the President of the UAE and the Chancellor of UAE University. That is evident in the great attention he pays to activating the extra-curricular activities in general, and intellectual, literary and artistic activities in particular. This is reflected in the modernization and development of the university library in all its facilities and programs, given its great importance to researchers, scholars and readers".
Alnaboodah said, "In addition to its scientific, intellectual and research roles, the UAEU seeks to sophisticate the culture of our students through reading in order to expand their knowledge horizons and achieve sustainable development. As a result, we will be ready to positively engage in future changes and keep pace with the process of construction and development with efficiency and competence."
The activities began with a panel discussion organized by the College of Education under the theme of "Teachers and Leaders as Lifelong Readers", with the presence of the University Vice Chancellors, a number of college Deans, heads of departments, faculty members and students. During that panel discussion, Prof. Hala Elhoweris, Acting Dean of the College of Education, discussed the importance of the Reading Month and the College of Education's role in enriching the activities. Within the same event, other reading activities were launched at the University Library, which included a number of intellectual panel discussions in various fields of knowledge, with the participation of writers, intellectuals and artists. Besides, there were literary café sessions highlighting the various aspects of readings and creative, cultural and artistic talents. In addition, Mariam Al Neyadi, Acting Director of UAEU Libraries, gave a presentation on the university library activities and role during the Reading Month.
