Augmented Reality-Virtual Reality (AR-VR) Lab

The most notable addition since the previous accreditation in terms of laboratories may well be the new Augmented Reality-Virtual Reality (AR-VR) Lab at the AE Department. It was fully completed and established by the end of Spring 2021 semester. The Lab contains 4 complete VR systems, and by the beginning of Fall 2021 semester, two sets of advanced AR devices and their operating software packages are expected to be added to the Lab (procurement underway). Being mobile, the VR systems allowed their utilization in Design Studios and Classrooms not just in the Lab. While almost all AE Undergraduate Courses could benefit from the Lab, but the most targeted courses are Building Design Studios, Building Construction Courses, and Graduation Projects. The lab will enable the students to develop their Building Information Modeling (BIM) designs in these courses and enhances the attainment of the CLOs especially those related to building systems integration. This training will help develop their skills to match the state-of-the-art advancement in the Architecture Engineering Construction (AEC) industry and thus, increase their employability. Periodical update for the software and the VR systems drivers is planned regularly. The VR systems was operated on a pilot basis in a couple of classes and design studios during the last two semesters. A full operation of the Lab by the Fall 2021 semester is expected with the return of the students to the campus.

Building Energy and Materials Lab

Since last accreditation the Energy Lab has expanded to become the Energy and Materials Lab. This was jointly created using both College and research funds. It serves mostly the graduate program, research and consulting. Additionally, it supports and is open to undergraduate students interested in energy efficiency and materials to gain hands-on experience with building energy efficiency and building materials.

The Building Energy Laboratory has seen further development since last accreditation and is planned to further grow to better respond to students instructional needs as defined by the integration of sustainability in all courses of the program (education) as well as play an active part in the overall country's quest for improved energy efficiency in the built environment through advanced research, where for example two US patent have been filed by Dr. Ahmed and Dr. Maatouk in connection with this lab. Hence, the Lab is being developed to support undergraduate instruction as well as graduate studies, research and consulting work.

Expo Site Visit, 27 January, 2021

This trip was organized from the AE Student Society (AESS) in 27 January 2021 after a call from UAEU in visiting the Site of EXPO2020. In this activity participated 20 AESS members from different years of COE Architectural Engineering Department under the supervision of Dr. Lindita Bande.
The aim of the trip was to show the students the different pavilions that were under construction. The trip was well organized. The Welcome Center was the first point to visit where it was given a general idea about EXPO2020. Afterwards the organizers of the EXPO2020 Site Tours brought the team of students in the main pavilions. The trip was done on an opened bus, since the structures were being build and it was a hazard to walk thru the area on foot. The students could see the different stages of the construction and the innovative structures applied in all pavilions. The experience of the site visit was very helpful to them as a live learning process. Several contractors were working in each pavilion; therefore, it was explained to the students the relevance of the project management in buildings. Coordination between different teams is an important role of an architectural engineer.
The trip lasted a full day and included also exploring some new areas in the welcome center. The students were quite excited to experience this trip and understand the high importance of an event such as EXPO2020.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi, 19 February, 2019

A field trip was organized to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi as part of ARCH340: History and Theory of Architecture course. The students were accompanied by Dr. Ahmed Agiel (Instructor) and Ar. Najeeba Ali (Research Associate). The visiting team was introduced to each of the buildings by informed guided tours. This academic experience provided the students with a clear understanding of the historical, theoretical and cultural contexts of the buildings.

All the 23 students were excited to engage themselves in various exploratory tasks both on/off site. These were based on their current understanding and recognition of the two opposing architectural styles/images. In addition to several tasks, photographs were also captured by the students based on specific architecture meaningfully attached to them.

The field trip achieved its main purpose by enabling the students:

  • To comprehend the historical influence in contemporary architectural production.
  • To recognize/distinguish the visual representation of different architectural styles.
  • To explore their perceptions/experiences within the architectural masterpieces.

ALNAGFA, Alain Preconception Design Competition-Al Dar 22 September 2019:

The competition is a collaborative outcome of the signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the UAEU and Al Dar Properties in 2019. An immediate action from the partnership was the launch of a design competition that form part of the Architectural Engineering Department’s Housing and Urban Design course offered during spring 2019 semester. Four groups of 17 female AE students, supervised by Dr. Sahera Bleibleh, had developed and presented 4 different proposals for Al Nagfa – a sizeable vacant land parcel within Al Sanaiya industrial area of Al Ain. All proposals were evaluated by jointly by UAEU faculty members and Al Dar representatives. The project proposals were presented in the presence of Al Dar representatives. The winning groups were announced at the end of the semester ceremony attended by Al Dar representatives at the UAEU. In addition to financial awards for each group, the first group was offered an internship opportunity at Al Dar Properties.

It is worth mentioning that Al Dar is a permanent partner with the UAEU, and the MOU has recently been reconsidered for renewal, to move forward with the already established collaboration between the public and private sectors.

3rd American University of Ras Al Khaimah Renewable Energy Competition  November 15, 2018:

AURAK Renewable Energy Competition is a forum for undergraduate students to showcase their research, exchange ideas, and improve their communication skills while competing for prizes.

The 2018 competition was sponsored by the Arab German Young Academy (AGYA). Prizes were awarded to students with the best poster presented at the competition. Eligible for participation were projects under the large umbrella of renewable energy or energy efficiency.

Two senior students, Shamma Al Kaabi and Fatema Al Zaabi, from the Architectural Engineering Department, represented in this 3rd year of the competition the College of Engineering of United Arab Emirates University with their graduation projects entitled "Indoor Agriculture Enhancing Energy Performance by Building Envelope". According to the two students, the experience of presenting their work to the esteemed judges and to other Universities was indeed very rewarding and worth the experience.

Fatima Bint Hazza Foundation’s Battle for Education II Design Competition:

This competition was focused on finding alternative design solutions for floating schools in Bangladesh, considering the need to strengthen the resiliency of the country’s primary education system in a context of rising sea levels due to climate change. The competition was announced in early September 2019 and an internal call was launched by UAEU’s Architectural Engineering Student Society (AESS) soon after.

Three groups of students showed interest in the AESS call for the competition and began researching the subject and sketching ideas. Weekly meetings were organized to support the students’ work, led by Dr. Martin Scoppa and with the continued assistance of Dr. Lindita Bande and Dr. Mohammed Al Battah. As the projects progressed and the designs evolved, numerous technical issues were also addressed. Notably the construction system and structure of the proposed designs, their floatability systems, and their ability to respond efficiently to the hot and humid climate of Bangladesh. Recyclable materials, passive and energy efficient systems, shading devices, renewable energy generation, water re-use, and integrated farming were explored and applied. The use of local materials and the need to design with local expertise and craftmanship in mind, was also discussed and integrated into the students’ proposals. Final presentations, including posters and videos were submitted to the Competition Jury in early January of 2021.

Ms. Aisha Osma Haj, Ms. Amna Aldarmaki, Ms. Ayesha Alhelli and Ms. Mahra Al Shamsi, from the AE Students Society placed among the top 5, winning teams. Besides being commended by the jury for the quality of their work, they received a certificate of achievement and a cash award. This is a remarkable achievement considering that more that 150 architecture students from UAE leading universities participated in the competition and their proposals were evaluated by an international jury.
