Vision, Mission, Purpose and Scope
Vision
To enhance the research capacity of UAEU and country by becoming the leading provider of Genomics and Metabolomics analysis infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates.
Mission
The mission of the UAE University Genomics Laboratory is aligned with the UAEUs focusing on its three pillars in Research, Education and Community Services by providing cutting edge research and diagnostic services as well as advanced training in the fields of genetics, genomics and metabolomics for the benefit of the UAE Community.
Purpose
The purpose of establishing UAE University Genomics Laboratory is for it to be a unique, world-class, national and regional center that integrates basic research in genetics, genomics and metabolomics with cutting-edge translational research as well as to train the next generation of geneticists and scientists to improve human health and provide state of the art molecular, biochemical and medical genetics care, novel therapeutics and prevention strategies for the UAE community.
Scope
In line with its mission, the UAEU Genomics Laboratory scope will be focused on the following:
The laboratory will enhance the international visibility of UAE and UAEU in the fields of medical genomics and metabolomics research by:
- Being the leading source of research into the causes and pathogenesis of genetic diseases in the UAE
- Establishing collaborations with leading local, international and regional genomics research and services institutions
- Translating inventions into patents and possibly marketable products to prompt the establishment of innovative entrepreneurial initiatives and start-up biotechnology companies in UAE
- Develop and provide competitive and innovative research and diagnostic solutions to healthcare, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors
- Seeking and developing novel approaches to prevent, diagnose and treat genetic disorders
- Identifying the genetic components of common multifactorial disorders such as cancer, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disorders in the UAE.
- Define relevant and actionable pharmacogenomics biomarkers relevant to medications prescribed to Emirati patients.
- Studying the metabolome of inborn errors of metabolism and other metabolic disorders
The facility will provide outstanding educational and training support for medical and postgraduate research students who wish to pursue a career in the fields of genetics, genomics or metabolomics. In addition, it will provide support for the current postgraduate programs (PhD and MSc) at CMHS and will initiate new programs such as MSc in Genomic Medicine and MSc in Genetic Counselling. Furthermore, it actively support post-doctoral fellowship training in Medical Genetics and Genomics and Biochemical Genetics.
On the medium to long term, we envisage the expansion of genomics and metabolomics research support services to include providing genetic, genomic, pharmacogenomics and biochemical diagnostic tests to the local health providers.
