This course is designed to provide HPE students with an overview of the field of health and physical education. Topics include, but not limited to, health promotion and behavioral changes, human wellness, careers in health and physical education, knowledge and skills essential to the development of health and physical education literacy, testing and evaluation of changes, and health promotion models. Emphasis is placed upon career opportunities in this multi-faceted profession as well.

This course aims at introducing students to the basic concepts of health and physical education. It covers topics such as health, physical fitness, nutrition, healthy lifestyle, diseases, and drug uses. It also enables students to apply those concepts of personal health in ways that are complementary to each other in various learning settings.

Invasion Games (PHED202)
This lab-based, hands-on course introduces HPE students to the fundamentals of selected invasion games, focusing on skill development, teaching strategies, and game knowledge. Students will actively engage in practice sessions that emphasize skill progressions, offensive and defensive tactics, officiating, and authentic assessment. The course aims to help students gain proficiency in the techniques of various invasion games and model best teaching practices, preparing them to teach and lead these games effectively in educational settings.

Swimming (PHED203)
This course introduces the fundamental principles and techniques of swimming, focusing on mastering key strokes such as freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. Students will engage in lab-based, hands-on sessions that emphasize practical skill development in the water. Core components include rhythmic breathing, water safety skills (such as floating, treading water, and safe entry/exit methods), and the understanding of aquatic mechanics. Through direct, in-water instruction and guided practice, students will develop both confidence and competency in swimming techniques. By the end of the course, students will have a solid foundation in swimming and essential water safety practices, making it an ideal starting point for beginners or those looking to improve their aquatic skills.

This is a lecture/lab course with hands-on learning. While lectures introduce the basic structure and function of key human body systems—including the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and nervous systems—the emphasis is on active, practical engagement. In the lab portion, students will engage in physical activities, body movement analysis, fitness testing, and the use of anatomical models to explore how these systems function during exercise.

This course aims at introducing the skills and training concepts of track and field. Candidates are expected to achieve an intermediate level of skill in the events. Conditioning and rules will also be covered.

This course introduces students to the concepts of movement education, with a focus on its domains and applications in early childhood education. Key topics include locomotor, non-locomotor, and object control skills and the importance of regular physical activity for promoting health. The course will also emphasize the role of family and community involvement, along with addressing the needs of children with special requirements in movement activities. Physical Fitness Conditioning (PHED302)
This lab-based course is designed to help candidates develop and assess overall physical fitness through hands-on application of training principles, including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Students will actively participate in workout sessions and aerobic exercises, and will be required to design, implement, and evaluate personalized fitness plans. In addition to practical activities, the course includes lectures and discussions aimed at equipping candidates with the knowledge to plan, motivate, and assess school-aged students’ physical fitness. Emphasis is also placed on promoting a positive attitude toward physical activity and healthy living.

This hands-on course is designed to expose HPE students to various aspects of school students’ personal health and wellness. Topics will include, but are not limited to: school students’ eating habits, physical fitness, weight management, disease prevention, substance use and abuse. HPE Students will engage in hands-on activities that will enable them to teach school students how to adopt a healthy lifestyle. HPE students will develop health and physical exercise lesson and unit plans to school students, participate in teaching lesson plans through microteaching to classmates and critique lesson plans, apply lesson plans to school children in a school environment, assess school students’ unhealthy living habits and apply techniques to modify unhealthy living habits, design physical exercise programs for school students to develop and maintain physical fitness, and prepare diet plans using weight management techniques.

This lab-based course introduces the skills and training concepts of individual and dual sports. Candidates will learn the mechanics and techniques of activities such as walking and running, weight training, badminton, table tennis, tennis, and archery. Candidates are expected to reach an intermediate level of proficiency in these sports. The course also emphasizes physical fitness, with regular assessments in muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory fitness. Conditioning, rules, and performance improvement will be key components. Practice outside of class time may be necessary to meet performance standards.

This is a lecture/lab course. The lecture part aims at introducing the investigation and application of mechanical principles to the study of human motion and the motion of sport objects. Health and Physical Education students will learn systematic approaches for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the human body as it engages in motor activities. The lab part is hands-on where students will work collaboratively and are required to use technology and software programs to analyze, measure and apply mechanical principles to study human movement.

HPE Students will engage in hands-on activities that will enable them to teach school students various psychological theories and constructs that affect exercise participation and adherence that include developing lesson plans, teaching lesson plans through microteaching to classmates and critiquing lesson plans, and applying lesson plans to school children in a school environment. Capstone Experiences in Health and Physical Education (PHED408)
This capstone course is a culminating, hands-on experience designed to integrate and apply the knowledge, skills, and concepts developed throughout the teacher education program. The course is designed to build on skills acquired in earlier courses. It emphasizes situations and challenges that exist in the "real world" and measures the student's achievement of the institution's general educational objective and the learning outcomes of the teacher education program. It is expected that students in the capstone experience will creatively analyze, synthesize, evaluate and reflect on learned knowledge in a project having a professional focus, while demonstrating capacity for being a teacher leader and fostering school change.

Student Teaching in Health and Physical Education (PHED409)
The aim of this course is to provide candidates with an opportunity to spend a full semester student teaching in one of the schools. During the course candidates are expected to demonstrate mastery of all standards for beginning teachers that have been adopted by the College of Education teacher programs. Planning and preparation, instruction, the classroom environment and professional responsibilities are the four domains in which candidates are evaluated. Candidates are expected to keep a student teaching portfolio to document work not demonstrated during a classroom observation visit. (This course is conducted in the last semester. Capstone Course (3 Cr. Hrs.) should be taken during the internship semester).
