The UAEU participates in the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

The United Arab Emirates University participated in the Global Sustainable Development Congress, which is hosted by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and organized by the Times Higher Education (THE), from May 30th to June 1st, 2023. The university delegation was led by Prof. Ahmed Ali Murad, Associate Provost for Research, and included Dr. Ruwaya Al-Kendi, Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the College of Science, Dr. Saifudeen Kabeer, Statistician at the Office of the Associate Provost for Research, Ms. Aysha AlNeyadi, Head of the Marketing Services Unit at the University Outreach Department, Ms. Mariam Al Qamzi, International Communication Executive, and Ms. Salama Al Dhaheri, Administrator at the office of the Vice Chancellor.
The UAEU participated by a platform that presented its academic programs, and provided a detailed presentation of the research centers at the university. The university's endeavors to enhance its research and community role in achieving the sustainable development goals were also highlighted. The university platform witnessed a wide turnout of attendees, who praised the university's academic status.
Prof. Ahmed Ali Murad, Associate Provost for Research, participated in a panel discussion on "Scientific Research, Innovation, Flexibility Measures, Overcoming Inequality and the Effects of Climate Change" during the congress sessions. During the discussion, he emphasized the important role of educational institutions in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals. He also emphasized the significance of empowering young individuals in scientific research and fostering effective partnerships to leverage the best educational and academic practices for developing a sustainable knowledge economy. Furthermore, at the exhibition accompanying the Congress, Prof. Ahmed Murad delivered a public lecture that highlighted the contribution of higher education institutions in raising awareness about sustainability. He showcased the experience of the UAEU, which stands out for actively involving students in finding innovative scientific solutions to challenges related to the Sustainable Development Goals through the Student Sustainable Development Goals Research program and various extra-curricular activities.
On the sidelines of the Congress, the UAEU delegation held business meetings with representatives and presidents from several universities. The delegation had the opportunity to meet with Prof. Tony Chan, President of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Prof. Ahmed Al Yamani, President of the Prince Sultan University, Prof. Abdulrahman Hilal Al-Talhi, President of the Prince Sattam bin Abdulaziz University, and Prof. Sibrand Poppema, President of Sunway University in Malaysia.
Prof. Ahmed Ali Murad explained that the university's participation in this congress aligns with the university's plan to enhance its global standing and establish an international reputation, evident in its global ranking. Moreover, the university's involvement seeks to foster impactful partnerships with participating universities and draw upon the best international and educational practices related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
