The College of Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University organizes a light festival

The Physics Department in the College of Sciences at the United Arab Emirates University organized a light festival on Monday and Tuesday, 2nd and 3rd of November, in the College of Information Technology Building. This was in cooperation with the Emirates Metrology Institute as part of the UNESCO International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL2015). Dr. Ahmed Murad, Dean of the College of Sciences, college professors, students, and school students were in attendance.
Dr. Murad, said that, “the university offers an opportunity to develop knowledge and enhance research skills”, he added that, “we are proud of our partnerships with stakeholders, in particular with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council which sponsored this event.” He thanked the participating students.
Speakers included Dr. Maamar Benkraouda, a professor in the College of Sciences, who talked about the importance of light and research in this field, and Mr. Amer Al Hashimi, from the Emirates Metrology Institute, who spoke about employment opportunities for graduates from the Department of Physics. This is a priority for the country.
The event included several lectures on light presented by professors in physics and lecturers from both inside and outside the University. This included Professor Khaled Al Ameri speaking on innovation and inspiration, while Mr. Saleh Thaker lectured about lasers.
An exhibition of light phenomena was organized and painting with light and shadows was showcased. There were also workshops for school students by students from of the Department of Physics.
