Overview
Radiology is a vital component of modern medicine, crucial for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of numerous medical conditions. At the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), our Radiology Department is dedicated to excellence in clinical practice, education, and research. Our team of experienced radiologists employs advanced imaging technologies in teaching hospitals, including X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, Ultrasound, and Nuclear Medicine. Our research initiatives strive to advance medical imaging, fostering innovation and progress.
The Radiology Department is committed to contributing to high-quality healthcare through patient care, education, and research.
Teaching
The Department of Radiology is actively involved in teaching diagnostic radiology across all years of the M.D. program. We emphasize the integration of radiology with other specialties during the Organ Systems Course through lectures, practicals, and tutorials. We deliver lectures on visual diagnostics and contribute to courses for master's students organized by the Department of Genetics and Genomics. Our faculty also plays a significant role in problem-based learning, preparing and assessing clinical skills exams, and conducting medical studies in collaboration with clinical and basic science departments.
Research
Our primary research areas include developing and enhancing imaging technologies and techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and patient outcomes. This encompasses advancements in MRI, CT, Ultrasound evaluation by machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. We explore the integration of AI and machine learning for automated image interpretation and decision support. Other key research focuses include investigating imaging biomarkers for disease diagnosis and prognosis and exploring new imaging applications in precision medicine and interventional radiology.
In addition to medical studies, our faculty members have developed new technologies to serve the local community. They have applied for a U.S. patent for a new method to diagnose and may be treat Alzheimer's disease and created a virtual reality application to combat childhood obesity.
Over the years, we have built and maintained a research team of five professionals trained to conduct high-quality studies in automated medical imaging assessment and with integrated clinical data. This team uses modern AI methods for image pre-processing and analysis. Most studies are in collaboration with other departments, such as surgery, internal medicine, and physiology. Their work in computer vision helps develop tools that assist in the diagnosis of diseases, assessing their severity, and predicting progression.
The impact of these studies is significant. They foster interdisciplinary collaboration, with students from the College of Education, Science, and Information Technology regularly visiting our department to gain hands-on experience with computational approaches to neuroscience, medical informatics, and clinical trials. They also encourage early entry into academic careers; each year, our students present 4-6 oral and poster presentations under the guidance of our faculty. Our research team is involved in several currently funded projects, including three SURE+ projects, one college project, one ASPIRE VRI, and one DOH project.
With the help of the UAEU administration and the ASPIRE VRI Grant, a new chapter of research will be opened in 2025 with the installation of a dedicated MRI for research in the CMHS, which will serve all interested departments of the CMHS and UAEU.
Service
Beyond teaching and research, our faculty members serve as consultants in teaching hospitals like Tawam and Al Ain Hospital. They supervise various medical examinations and interventional procedures.
We aim to innovate and advance imaging capabilities to serve patients and healthcare providers better. For more information on our faculty members' research involvement, please visit the Department of Radiology — United Arab Emirates University.
