Overview
Welcome to the Internal Medicine Department, where we strive for excellence and innovation in patient care, clinical teaching and clinical research. Our dedicated team of faculty and staff focuses on guidance and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students both in campus and in clinical placements. We have an absolute commitment to delivering world-class teaching and research to improve the health and well-being of patients.
Teaching
The Department of Internal Medicine plays a crucial role in teaching and coordinating Pre-Clinical (Year 3 and 4) and Clinical (Year 5 and 6) courses of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program.
In Year 3 and Year 4, the department contributes significantly to didactic lectures as well as clinical skills simulation’ teaching program.
During Year 5 and Year 6, clerkship students immerse themselves in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine clinical placements in affiliated teaching hospitals. During year-5, the clerkship students are offered eight weeks full-time clinical placement in Internal Medicine involving in-patient services at one of the university affiliated teaching hospitals. During year 6, the clerkship students are offered 8-week of advanced clerkship placements in Internal Medicine subspecialities as well as 4-week clerkship placement in Emergency Medicine specialty.
Research
The department’s research projects encompass many fields of clinical and translational research. Our faculty strive to develop innovative research methods that can bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and patients’ needs for acute and chronic illnesses across various specialties.
Some of the key research areas in the department include: Diabetes, Cardiovascular, Stroke, Chronic Kidney Diseases, Obesity, Fatty liver disease, Sleep apnoea, Rheumatologic disorders, regenerative dermatology, Breast Cancer, Trauma, Experimental diabetes, and wellbeing and clinical learning.

Clinical & Community Services
The faculty members of the department of Internal provide regular in-patient and out-patient clinical service at a number of affiliated teaching hospitals. Our faculty members also provide community services to the public and a number of professional societies and organizations. These services span a wide range of activities including membership and leadership of national and international professional societies and scientific journals as well as engagements in community-based educational activities, residency training programs and postgraduate certification exams for the Emirati Board and Arab Board.
