Overview

The UAEU Journal of Law is a scientific journal that is regularly published by the College of Law. The first issue of the Journal was published in May 1987 which corresponds to the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the College of Sharia and Law. The legal journal was published on an annual basis for the Issues No.1 through No.13. Then, it was published twice per year, Issues no.14 through No.21. The Issues, No.22 through No.24, were published every three months and more recently, the Issues No.25 up until now (Issue No. 56, January 2014) were published on a quarterly basis on the following months: January, April; July and October.

The Journal publishes qualitative scientific research where the publication and assessment rules are strictly enforced. The research papers are published in three languages (Arabic, English and French).

The legal Journal is listed in the International Journals Index, Ulrich ‘Periodicals Directory, under the number 349199 as well as the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) 1608-1013. Moreover, the journal has been classified and coded in a number of international indices and it is published online on the legal journal.

The Journal includes a dedicated supplement focused on raising awareness of the principles and legal opinions issued by the Fatwa and Legislative Department of the Ministry of Justice as well as the most important rulings of the Federal Supreme Court.

Furthermore, the Journal has formed an advisory board consisting of some of the leading scientific, social and public figures to contribute with their knowledge and expertise.

In addition, the Journal has published important federal legislations such as: Civil law and its Explanatory Framework Memorandum, Human Resources Law, E-Commerce Transaction Law, Medical Practice Liability Law, Cybercrimes Law, Consumer Protection Law, and the Civil Transactions Law and its Explanatory Framework Memorandum. This is proof that the Journal has contributed significantly to community service, through publication of such laws, aiming thereby to raise legal awareness on a broader spectrum of the society. By the same token, this does not mean at all that the magazine has given up its leading role as a scientific journal specialized in research; rather the Journal has excelled and exceeded the latter role in order to fulfill the former.

Objectives

The UAEU Journal of Law is an academic, specialized and refereed journal that it is quarterly published by United Arab Emirates University, College of Law. It is available online and in print.
Journal Objectives:

Publishing original research concerned with recent developments in the different fields of law.
Strengthening the academic and intellectual contacts between the College of Law of the UAE University, peer universities, and other institutions.
Tackling contemporary human issues within the framework of Sharia, law, and Islamic Studies.
To follow up new academic trends in the fields of Sharia, law, and Islamic Studies as demonstrated in recently published books, modern
translations, dissertations, and papers submitted to academic conferences and seminars.

Publishing Ethics

Ethical Guidelines for Authors

Authors must appropriately cite all relevant publications, and must ensure that they have the relevant Intellectual Property Rights to publish the material contained in their submissions and have not copied someone else's work without the relevant permissions and attribution. The corresponding author should ensure all named co-authors consent to publication and to being named as a co-author. All persons who have made significant scientific or literary contributions to the work reported should be named as co-authors.
Authors must ensure that the manuscript has not been published previously, in part or in whole, in Arabic, English, French, or any other language, and that the manuscript has not and will not be submitted to any other journal while still under review for this journal. And that the research is authentic work, never submitted for publication by another party, and that it is not part of a published book nor derived from a Masters or Doctorate dissertation. If accepted, the manuscript shall not be published elsewhere in any form without prior written consent of the Publisher.
All authors named on the paper are equally held accountable for the content of a submitted manuscript or a published paper. Authors must avoid making defamatory statements in submitted articles which could be construed as impugning any person's reputation. They must declare any potential conflict of interest – be it professional or financial – which could be held to arise with respect to the article.

Ethical Guidelines for Peer reviewers

Peer reviewers should respond in a reasonable time-frame, especially if they cannot do the review, and without intentional delay. They must declare if they do not have the subject expertise required to carry out the review or if they are able to assess only part of the manuscript, outlining clearly the areas for which they have the relevant expertise.
Peer reviewers must make the editors aware of any potential conflicts of interest that may affect the paper under review, not allow their reviews to be influenced by the origins of a manuscript, by the nationality, religious or political beliefs, gender or other characteristics of the authors, or by commercial considerations.
Peer reviewers should maintain confidentiality about the existence and substance of the manuscript. It is inappropriate to share the manuscript or to discuss it in detail with others before publication. Reviewers should not contact the authors directly without the permission of the journal, and they must not retain the manuscript for their personal use.
Peer reviewers must give specific comments and suggestions, including about layout and format, Title, Abstract, Introduction, Method, statistical errors, Results, Conclusion/Discussion, language, references, the shortcomings and/or strengths of a study. They are also under the duty to observe ethical violations, not limited to but including suspected duplicate publication, fraud, and plagiarism.

Ethical Guidelines for Peer Editors

Editors must ensure the quality of the material they publish and that all published reports of research have been reviewed by suitably qualified reviewers.
Editors must respect requests from authors that an individual should not review their submission, if these are well-reasoned. They must also require reviewers to disclose any potential competing interests before agreeing to review a submission.
Editors must act in a balanced, objective, and fair way while executing their duties without committing harmful discrimination based on illegal grounds. They must give authors a reasonable opportunity to respond to any complaints.
Manuscripts submitted to the journal will be checked for originality using anti-plagiarism software. If author (s) are found guilty of plagiarism, the journal reserves the right to reject/retract or withdraw the paper and declines further submissions from the offending authors for a period of up to five years by informing all the interested parties, including journal editors and the author's department head and/or institution of the misconduct.
Article withdrawal: Withdrawal request received before initiating the peer-review process (normally within 3 days of submission) will be considered immediately without asking any reason. However, after the review process gets initiated, the author may withdraw the manuscript by providing a compelling ethical reason and bearing the review costs. Manuscript withdrawn will not be allowed for the accepted manuscript.

The editorial board reviews the complaints submitted by researchers, then a decision is made in accordance with the publishing rules and regulations followed by the Journal.
If the editorial board determines that the same research paper was previously submitted to the journal, has been published in another journal, participated in a conference, or was extracted from his/her academic thesis (Master's/PhD...) or was plagiarized, the researcher shall be informed of this matter, and publication privileges shall be revoked from him/her permanently.
Manuscripts submitted to the journal will be checked for originality using anti-plagiarism software. 1) Academic Researches:

Original articles in the fields of (Law).

2) Book Reviews:

The Journal publishes reviews, evaluation, and critique of recently published books dealing with a noteworthy topic in juristic and legal fields. The book review should not exceed (8) printed pages, and covers main ideas along with points for and against. The cover page for review report should contain the author's name, book title, place of publication, publisher, year of publication, number of pages, the reviewer's name, academic title, and university associated with.

3) Judicial Decisions and Advisory Opinions:

The Journal publishes the most important decisions issued by the Federal Supreme Court of the UAE, Cassation Court of Dubai, legal opinions and principles of the Legislation and Legal Advice Dept., of the Ministry of Justice as well as the judgments and advisory opinions of the international Court of Justice, with comments on those rulings and opinions.

4) Reports on Symposia and Conferences:

The Journal publishes reports on conferences, symposia, and seminars dealing with juristic and legal issues, which are held locally, regionally, and internationally. The report should not exceed (5) printed pages, and must be detailed and well-organized. It must cover all the items and papers which were presented, as well as the decisions and recommendations concluded, at the conference.

5) Summaries for Doctoral Dissertations & Master Theses:

The Journal publishes summaries for accepted and approved recent doctoral and master dissertations that are carried out by researches from the UAE. The researcher should submit a summary which should not exceed (3) printed pages. The cover page should include the title, the researcher's name, supervisor's name, the academic department, and the institution name.

All contributions are subject to review and assessment in accordance with norms of refereed publications.
Contributions may be written in Arabic, English, or French.
Authors have to carefully apply acceptable research methodologies, as well as to observe academic values.
References and literature used in each page have to be clearly cited as footnotes.
Jurisprudential quotations must be fully punctuated and vocalized.
Authors have to observe that their manuscripts in compliance with linguistic rules.
Research papers should not exceed 40 (A4) pages, unless otherwise accepted by editors.
Authors should make any required amendments according to the referees’ reports, and forward the revised version of their paper to the Journal within 15 days.
Authors' CV must be attached to the paper, including their name, title, area of specialization, employment, employer full address containing postal address, email address, and telephone numbers.
An abstract not less than 200 words and not exceeding 300 words must be submitted for each paper, both in Arabic and English.
Authors will be notified about receipt of their papers within one week.
Papers must to be word processed. Three copies of the paper must be submitted to the Editorial Board. Another copy must be provided on a floppy disk or forwarded by e-mail, in accordance with the following guidelines:

Word processing has to be on Microsoft Word 2000 or later editions.
Times New Roman font size (12) to be used for the paper body.
Footnotes on Times New Roman, size (10).
Main headings Times New Roman, bold (14).
Sub headings Times New Roman, bold (12).

All reference citations within the text are to be identified as follows: First and last names of the author, book's title, page number(s), and year of publication between brackets.

Example: H. L. A. HART, THE CONCEPT OF LAW (1994), 220.

If there are more than three authors, first and last names of the first author should be provided followed by: et al., book's title, page number(s) and year of publication between brackets.

Example: EDWIN B. FIRMAGE, et al., RELIGION AND LAW (1990), 189.

First and last names of the author, article's title, journal's title, page number(s), and year of publication between brackets.

Example: M. BASSIOUNI, Combating Impunity For International Crimes. 71 UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO LAW REVIEW (2000), 409.

All references should be listed sequentially at the end of the manuscript in an alphabetical order in the following manner:

a) Books:

In case there are more than three authors for the same reference, citation should be written in the following form:

e) Priority of Publishing:

Publishing priority will be set according to the following criteria:

Research papers related to the UAE.
Date of receipt by the Editor-in-Chief.
Diversity of the subjects.

Technical considerations will control the order in which the papers will be arranged in each issue of the journal.
The papers submitted to the Journal will not be returned to authors, whether accepted or rejected.
No payment will be made to the authors of the published papers, book reviews or any intellectual work unless they are carried out at the Journal's official request.
An Author will receive two copies of the Journal issue that has her\his published paper, in addition to 10 copies of their extracted research paper.
