SMART
Program
Reports
UAEU’s Seminars in Mastering the Arts (SMART) program
for the new academic year began with a series of four
classical music workshops at UAEU new campus. Dr.
Alberto Nones, UAEU visiting professor in the Philosophy
Department, and Ms. Gaby Malzahn, the founder and
director of the House of Arts in Al Ain, organized and
supervised the rotation of these events, with the aim of
providing students with an aesthetic experience of live
music which was part of their academic day.
The workshops preceded “It’s
Greek to Me, a Piano Recital,?
by World Piano Competition
Medalist and Greek native loannis
Potamoussis on Oct. 26 at UAEU
new campus CIT Auditorium.
Potamoussis presented two of the
most challenging works in piano
literature: Ravel’s “Scarbo? from
Gaspard de la Nuit and Balakirev’s
“Islamey,? as well as works by
Mozart, Chopin, “Albeniz, and the
dances of his beloved homeland.
The above performance was
under the patronage of H.E. Dr.
Abdullah Al-Khanbashi with the
support of the Abu Dhabi Music
and Arts Foundation (ADMAF)
and the Emirates Foundation.
Future SMART programs included
a series of activities such as
“Shakespeare in Performance?,
“Shakespeare Festival?, “the
San Francisco Shakespeare
Festival?, and The Art Garden.
This project will engage students
in the mechanics of art installation
that seeks to have them understand
the connection between art and
society, and how through the
creation of an art project, media,
arts and design can lead to new
career possibilities for our students.
Over the years since its inception,
the SMART program has helped
foster a strong sense of
academic community.
SMART residencies
encourage:
Use of the arts as a mode
and catalyst for learning,
Critical evaluation of art
and cultural artifacts,
Improved technique and
confdence in presentation
and communication skills,
Enhanced students
empowerment in the arts,
Physical products produced
during the workshop, and
Increased appreciation of
the role of art in society.
