residential college is to
design housing as the
centre of student life and as
an important cornerstone
of academic activities
UAEU intends to establish residential colleges
equipped with labs and rest-houses.
Reports
UAEU launched a plan to change the
interior design of student housing
including radical changes in the
concept of student housing. This
plan makes housing an extension
of the interaction that students
have while studying in that
academic department or faculty.
According to the plan, the interior
shall be equipped with specialized
scientifc labs with some living and
recreational places for students in
the residence. This initiative by the
university comes after the success
of launching the frst residential
college for female students for 508
students.
Dr. Abdullah Saad Al-Khanbashi,
Vice Chancellor, confrmed that
this initiative was another instance
where the university distinguished
itself amongst Higher Education
Institutions, the country, and
the Arab World. According to
the philosophy of the residential
college, housing was redesigned to
be a centre of student life and an
important cornerstone of academic
activities. It provides a distinguished
academic environment to establish
and enhance the sense of belonging
and identity and students` collective
role within the wider university
community. The College provides
academic guidance, lectures,
student activities and classroom
meetings. It also represents a
vibrant home of a global community
comprising students, teaching staf,
employees and researchers.
He further mentioned that the
Residential College attracted 508
female students of which there are
308 female national students and
200 female students on fellowships
and scholarships from all parts of
the world. There are 35 postgraduate
students, 16 Ph.D. students’ and
19 Master students; as well as 5
research assistants. Undergraduate
students constitute the majority
of the resident students with 164
studying at the Faculty of Medicine
and Health Sciences and others on
academic internship programs.
Dr. Aisha Salem Al Daheri, the
Manager of the Residential College
indicated that the College is
considered a quantum leap in the
philosophy of student housing
in Higher Education Institutions,
providing a positive impact on
enhancing students` ability to
be distinguished. It also gives the
students the chance to interact
with members of teaching staf.
The College is doing its best to be
a place for a variety of cultural,
social and intellectual life. A strong
link is forged between academic
and residential life providing
opportunities to continue post
graduate study, supporting a
further principle of the residential
college.
